Colchicine

Colchicine reduces the formation of uric acid crystals in the affected joint and thereby reduces the amount of acute inflammation and pain. It also decreases the levels of uric acid in the blood or the amount that is excreted in the urine.

Proper Use

If taking colchicine by itself and only at the time of a gout attack, start taking it at the beginning of a gout attack. Stop taking it when the pain has eased or if you begin to feel nauseated, vomit, experience stomach pain, start to have diarrhea, or if you have taken the maximum total dose that the health care provider prescribed. Do not take this medication any more often than every 3 days, unless otherwise instructed by the health care provider. Continue to take any other medication already being taken to treat gout.

If taking colchicine by itself on a regular basis, increase the normal dose at the first indications of an attack. Stop taking the higher dose when the pain has eased or if you begin to feel nauseated, vomit, experience stomach pain, start to have diarrhea, or have taken the maximum total dose that the health care provider prescribed. After the attack is over, resume taking the lower dose.
